Public events

Update: The Occupy movement in Durban is meeting at Speakers Corner, corner of Walnut Road and Bram Fischer, here’s a website, and Facebook page.

The official COP17 website is not very helpful to members of the general public wanting to somehow participate in or observe COP17.

To access the official COP17 negotiations, side events and exhibits (delegate stands) at the International Convention Centre and the adjacent Durban Exhibition Centre, you must be a registered UNFCCC delegate via an accredited organisation (and registration closed long ago for all but the media). There’s no getting round this. Security is very high and the ICC becomes UN-administered territory during the COP.

The general public can attend:

NON-SPECIALIST PUBLIC EVENTS: Films, theatre, arts, civil society, march, rally, etc.

FAITH COMMUNITY EVENTS

• The Climate Change Response Expo organised by the SA government, 300m from the ICC and DEC (Centrum Car Park, Bram Fischer Road). This tends to pull a lot of  business exhibits. Be prepared for high levels of greenwash.

• Civil society events at Howard College (ordinary people and activists from around the world).

• On 27 Nov, the Mass Multi-faith Rally and Concert for Climate Justice led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu at King’s Park Stadium on Sunday 27 November (entrance free, gates open at 12pm, formalities from around 2pm).

• Other faith-coordinated events at the Diakonia Centre in downtown Durban (five mins from the ICC).

• On Sat Dec 3, the Global Day of Action march from Howard College to the ICC.

• The Adaptation Network has a list of events, here (some of these events are by invitation only).

• On Sun Dec 4, a multi-faith prayer service for the success of the talks.

• Other parallel events and activities hosted by various organisations at a multitude of venues, by announcement or invitation. Visiting NGOs, for example, are likely to host seminars at beachfront hotels. Business events are hosted by the National Business Initiative.

Find constant civil society updates on the C17 Facebook page.

    • hello Victor,

Your constituency is important, but there will be several thousand meetings happening in Durban during COP17. Which one are you referring to? Registration for the COP itself closed months ago. Please read this site more carefully – I cannot give you access to COP17. You can organise access to other meetings yourself where possible.

      regards, David

  11. I will realy like to share my idea with the cop17 comittee,by requesting the comittee to deploy few candidates in provinces where the progammes and information on helping on climate change, some of our community in our country dont have an access on a media or where the event is held, and i believe if the can rich information they will take part on cop17.
Project profile is prepad it contains programmes of running the project.

Your respond on this proposal, will be highly reccomended.

    Yours faithfuly
